Principal's Message

Founding Sister of the Antonine Sisters – Mother Isabelle Khoury

It is important to recognise those who came before us who made significant contributions and changes that led to the success of the Antonine Sisters around the world. One of those important people was Mother Isabelle Khoury.

  • Mother Isabelle was born April 29, 1878 in Jezzine, South Lebanon, in an aristocratic family known for their humanity, culture and spirituality.
  • In 1894, she joined the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Sisters and stayed with them for 10 years.
  • In 1908, she joined the Antonine cloistered nuns at Mar Antonios of Padua monastery in Jezzine
  • Thus, she became knowledgeable with both the tradition and spirituality of the Latin and Maronite liturgical heritage

Mother Isabelle started by opening schools for the poor and an orphanage. More Sisters joined her with numbers increasing. Young women who wanted to live their vows and work to help the communities they served. It was this step that paved the way for our own Antonine College in Melbourne so many years later.

Three characteristics exemplified the spirit of the young generation of Sisters :

  • Love and preference for the poor over all in their convents and institutions

  • Evangelical and prophetic simplicity based on the presence of Christ in their lives

  • Family spirit inherent in love, forgiveness and joy

We remember Mother Isabelle in our prayers and we are grateful to her, for her vocation led the Antonine Sisters to the Melbourne Community. The Antonine Sisters who came to Melbourne followed in Mother Isabelle’s footsteps and have supported the community by establishing an Aged Care Facilities, Antonine College, and Antonine Sisters Child Care. Not to mention their pastoral support of those who are sick, grieving or need spiritual guidance.

- Ms Joanne Bacash

Deputy Principal - Cedar Campus

It is important to give thanks who do so much for us. Often, we take for granted the many things that are done to support us and provide opportunities. You, the parents and the carers of the children of Antonine College need to be thanked for everything you do. You do so much for the children at home and for us as a community every day. At home, you care for your children in many ways. You offer words of encouragement, wipe away tears, keep them on track, and simply love them for who they are, just to list a few. In our school community, you get involved in the many opportunities on offer to create partnerships and support the learning of your children. It truly has been wonderful seeing parents taking part with the parent training and supporting our students in classrooms throughout the Campus.

As we work towards the end of another productive term, it has been wonderful to see the sustained focus and the positive mindset of the students. It has been a very busy term! Various assessments, lunch time clubs, Anzac Day, First Communion preparation, Mother’s Day and Pentecost Prayer Service, Corpus Christi Adoration, Year 5 camp, Assemblies, interviewing our new Foundation students, Inter School Sports, Sports Day, Book Fair, various excursions and incursions and of course plenty of learning. Together parents, friends, students and staff make Cedar Campus a truly vibrant and energetic community. Congratulations to our students on their achievements this term.

Lost Property

The office has received a number of calls from parents regarding lost jumpers and jackets. We spoke to all students during assembly about taking responsibility for their belongings, in particular jumpers and containers and reminded them to ensure that they collect things from where they leave them whether in the classroom or outside. I would also ask that parents check their children’s jumpers to ensure they have their own jumpers and that all jumpers/jackets are labelled clearly. Lost property is located in the Cedar Atrium near the front admin office.

Creative Play

What to expect as your child’s imagination grows?

By school-age, your child will probably:

  • have a clearer understanding of what’s real and what’s pretend.
  • be able to plan new creative arts including drawing, painting, dance and music
  • be able to tell you a made-up story.
  • start to grow out of fears at around six years of age – for example, fear of monsters, the dark and animals.

Even though school-age children might be doing more structured activities and games, open-ended play is still important at this age. This type of play boosts your child’s creative development and teaches her how to experiment, think, learn and solve problems.

Your child will be more likely to get involved in creative and imaginative activities if you put some limits on screen time – that is, time spent in front of televisions, computers, tablets, mobile phones and other electronic devices. When your child does have screen time, you can help make good-quality media choices that spark imagination.

Here are some play ideas to get your child going: https://raisingchildren.net.au/

Faith Development

Religion Overview at Cedar Campus

We are finally at the half way mark for the year! It has been a crazy term filled with many wonderful religious celebrations.

We began Term 2 with our Easter prayer service, acknowledging the wonderous miracle of Jesus’ resurrection and His ultimate sacrifice for us. Years 4-6 celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation with Father Richard and explored different parables in relation to how we can be better people in society and better people to God.

May was the month of Mary and our beautiful display in the atrium was fully brought together by each student creating a flower to give our Mother. Students in Foundation to Year 3 concluded the month with a prayer service and a procession around the school to give Mary flowers for her intercession.

Adoration time was allocated to each classroom for students to be in the presence of the monstrance on the Feast of Corpus Christi. It was a sacred time for students to reflect and be at one with the Body of Christ.

The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with this, our display in the atrium was transformed to show the love of Jesus and to show the Holy Spirit through the Season of Pentecost.

I wish you all a blessed and safe break. I am looking forward to what term 3 will bring us!

- Ms Tanya Khattar

Religion Overview at St Joseph Campus

Throughout Semester 1, our students have participated in many liturgical celebrations and prayer services. Thank you to Monsignor Joe, Sister Rita, and all of our Religious Education teachers for giving students an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the various feast days, and to our students, for their participation in their respective year level liturgies and class prayer services.

Thank you to Ms Isabella Athaide and Ms Angela Markas for supporting students in Faith Club. Faith Club is always the highlight of the week, where students from Year 7-12 come together for discussions, bible studies, and activities. This term, students have been watching various topics delivered by Father Rob Galea on questions that they have about their faith. For our Year 12 students, a highlight this term was the discussion organised by Andre Fatoul with their Principal, Ms Joanne Bacash. Year 12 students were able to ask questions about their faith and appreciated this open discussion. Thank you to Ms Joanne Bacash for giving students this opportunity this faith formation opportunity.

Retreats are an integral part of Antonine College. In Semester 1, the Youth Mission Team facilitated the Year 10-12 retreats and Year 7 Religion teachers facilitated the Year 7 Retreat. We look forward to the Year 8 and Year 9 Retreats in Term 3.

The Religious Education classrooms have been busy this semester with students learning about various topics related to the Catholic faith in Year 7-10. At Year 7, students began with a focus on the Maronite Faith and moved onto looking at the Old Testament, reflecting on the biblical stories of Moses, Abraham, and Joseph and the importance of sacrifice and forgiveness, then and now. In Year 8, students focused on the life of Jesus and early Christianity, concluding the term by looking at early and contemporary martyrs to the Christian faith. At Year 9, students began the year focusing on issues relating to morality and justice, and the Catholic response to injustice. They then looked at a unit on Mary and Marian Apparitions. Finally, Year 10 students were able to reflect on Jesus as the Suffering Servant and the theme of Discipleship in their study of the Gospel of Mark. In Term 2, students participated in various devotional prayers and created their own contemplative prayer, concluding the term with a short unit on the Eucharist and its significance.

    Holiday Reading

Please encourage your children to read over the holidays! Students across Year F-9 have been learning about selecting books that are Just Right for them – this means books that are at an appropriate level and high interest and engagement for the reader.

Students have set goals to achieve for their reading and reflected on their progress and achievement throughout Semester 1. As a College we are prioritising time to read independently and supporting students to think about themselves as readers – questioning, summarising, predicting, inferring, critiquing, analysing, adjusting, synthesising, connecting - to build confidence in and passion for reading.

A trip to the local Library would be a wonderful activity for the holidays and any opportunity to read with or to your children is beneficial.

    - Ms Ria Coffey

Staff Training – Restorative Practices and Circle Time Discussions

This term all staff at both Cedar and St Joseph Campus engaged in Restorative Practices professional learning facilitated by Kristy Elliot. Restorative Practice is what practitioners do when they use the principles, values and practices of the philosophy of Restorative Justice (RJ). Restorative Justice principles and processes have existed in some cultures for hundreds of years. The Restorative Justice Framework is a values-based, collaborative approach to dealing with harmful behaviour. People and relationships are viewed as the most important aspect of schools and communities. A basic need of all people is to feel connected to others (belonging) and respected within their communities (significance). These factors have significant impact on relationships and in turn achievement.

Circle Time Discussions are a critical component to forming strong relationships with teachers and students and students with their peers. Staff took part in training on how to run an effective circle time and at the St Joseph campus students facilitated this training with.

We woud like to thank Ameer and Amani Alkichani, Janette Albazi, Merian Diab and Andre Fatoul of Year 12 for their time in supporting teachers.

Year 1 and Year 5 Buddies Religion Activity

In Year 1 and Year 5 we have been looking at the season of Pentecost in our religion classes. Pentecost is the time when the Holy Spirit came into the house of the disciples in Jerusalem. Flames appeared on the tops of the disciples’ heads, which filled them with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit allowed the disciples to speak many languages to help spread the word of Jesus.

During our buddies’ sessions 1C and 5B worked on together to create photos that represent the flames of Holy Spirit that appeared on the disciples’ heads.

Year 8 Dance - student reflection

From Monday 6th to Friday 10th of March all Year 8 students participated in a Hip Hop incursion within their dance class. Hip Hop instructors came to the college and taught the Year 8 cohort some grooves and learnt a dance which they performed to each other at the end of the lesson. It was great to see all students participating and performing. Below are some comments from students in Year 8.

The dance incursion was a blast! We learnt a hip hop routine which is a style we haven't done in our usual dance classes before. I really enjoyed this incursion because the instructor was very supportive and made it as fun as possible. I also learnt the names and moves of new dance moves. I want to thank Miss Natoli and Miss G for organising this incursion.

      Mia Azzi 8B

Within the Hip Hop Dance Incursion, 8A learnt a variety of skills whilst movements, in which overall allowed us into gaining full energy. We first started off by warming up, in which caused our muscles into being stretched out and ready, in order to begin the creative choreography, in which we had cheerfully learnt together as a team. As a result, we all had an amusing time, getting to learn new skills. Overall, we would love to say thank you to Ms Natoli for being a wonderful teacher and organising this lovely incursion for the Year 8s. Additionally, we would also like to say thank you to the dance instructor from the Dance Experts.

      Maryam Rahoomi 8A

Throughout the Hip Hop Dance Incursion, our class learnt a variety of hip hop dance skills, which brought us to delight and to have an enjoyable lesson overall. From warming up to cooling down and learning choreography for a dance, it was a very lovely incursion Ms Natoli has prepared for us, in which we are very thankful for. Within the incursion, the whole class developed and enhanced over time, to being completely comfortable with Hip Hop and being able to perform a dance with a group. Consequently, there is no doubt this wonderful incursion has overall had a positive effect towards us to learn various hip hop dance skills.

      Year 9 Camp

On May 23rd Year 9 students from Antonine College packed their bags, said goodbye to loved ones and were on their way to Camp Coonawarra (a 3.5hr drive out of Melbourne). Students partook in a range of different activities; the giant swing, flying fox, the labyrinth, damper making, high ropes course, canoeing and raft making.

These activities allowed our students to build a great deal of resilience, students needed to step out of their comfort zone, work as a team and problem solve to complete many of the activities. In addition to this, students had time at the end of their busy day to build new friendships within their year level, get to know their teachers outside of the classroom walls and grow qualities to make them responsible young adults. It was a pleasure to take this group away, they upheld the college values and represented the college well. I thank Sr Rita, Rob, Lucy, Indira, Isaac and Jye for their assistance and company on camp.
