Principal's Message

The Feast of Corpus Christi

Feast of Corpus Christi, also called Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, festival of the Catholic Church in honour of the real presence of the body (corpus) of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist

What does this mean for us?

On the very same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me.’

In the same way he took the cup after supper and said, then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and shared it with his friends. He said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.’

Through this action Jesus wants his followers to remember his offering of himself on the altar of the cross

In the Gospel reading, we learn that Jesus had been teaching a large group of people — there were thousands there and it was late in the day. His apostles came to him worried about taking responsibility for all those people and then we hear about the feeding of the 5000.

Pope Francis once said, “Christ needs this little bit — like what happened in the multiplication of the bread — to transform it into the Eucharistic gift which nourishes and unites everyone in his body, which is the Church.”

We as Corpus Christi College community can transform the Eucharistic gift into our lives when we help others through acts of service. We become one body, one community when we support each other to become people of Courage, Compassion and Committed to being a positive difference in the world.

On the Feast of Corpus Christ, we ask Jesus to bless and protect all our Antonine College Community.

During the upcoming school holidays, we will be landscaped the fence line along Nicholson street to prepare for the addition of a play area for years Foundation to Year 2. Please see the little village cubbies we will be adding in the September school holidays to encourage play and exploration for the younger students https://www.castleandcubby.com.au/collections/themed-village-cubby-houses

We will be spending just under $20,000 on this little village. The P & F will be fundraising to help cover these costs.

We have started using our new food technology room for cooking classes. We look forward to developing this into a specialist subject for 2024.

Year 3 Holy Communion Commitment Mass

On Sunday 4 June our First Holy Communion students celebrated Commitment Mass with their parents at Our Lady of Lebanon Church.

Monsignor Joe talked during his homily about the sacrament of Holy Communion, or the Eucharist is one of the three sacraments of initiation (the others being Baptism and Confirmation). While the other two Sacraments confirm our membership of the Catholic Church, Holy Communion nourishes us in our spiritual life.

In this sacrament, we remember what Jesus did for us in his life, death and resurrection. We remember particularly the last Supper when Jesus transformed the bread and wine into his own precious body and blood.

We pray for our students. May God bless them and their families.

Cedar Staff – Writing Moderation

On Monday, 29th May, the staff at Cedar Campus gathered in the staffroom with narrative samples written by each of the students at the campus. All students responded to the same narrative prompt – a photo of a teddy bear in front of a cloudy background – regardless of whether they were in Foundation or Year 6, and used it to inspire a story. Teachers then assessed these written stories against the standards of Victorian Curriculum, looking for elements such as grammar, story structure, and use of detail and vocabulary. It was a valuable exercise that allowed teachers to compare high- and low-achieving students in their own classes with students in grades above and below, to ensure we are marking students accurately on semester reports and to identify areas where we can better support our young writers.

The staff at Cedar Campus plan to repeat this writing moderation exercise later in the year with different genres such as recounts and information reports, to ensure we are supporting student writing throughout the primary years, regardless of the type of texts they are drafting.

Year 1 and 3 Buddies

Our 1A and 3A students enjoyed catching up with their buddies in the atrium. Both year levels have been learning about the features of non-fiction texts, so this provided the perfect opportunity for the year 3 students to share their knowledge and expertise with their younger buddies. The students discussed features such as the contents page, glossary, headings, captions, and labelled diagrams. The buzz of learning was clearly evident.

Year 1 Excursion - Heritage Village

On Wednesday, the 31st of May, the year 1 students went to Bundoora Park, Heritage Village.

The educational journey transported students back in time to witness what life was like in the past. They explored communication, home, chores, school and games. This hands-on approach to learning made the subject come alive. The students also got an insight into how our First Nations people lived on the land before European settlement.

Foundation - Year 2 Morning Tea

The F-2 morning tea was a huge success!

The students displayed fantastic table manners and waited patiently to be served while interacting respectfully with each other. The atrium was filled with laughter, warmth, and a sense of togetherness, which truly reflected the spirit of our school.

A big thank you to MEB Bakery who donated the bread, the F-2 teachers, ESO’s and Sister Veronique who organised it all. Our dedicated staff made this a memorable occasion for all involved. As some of the students said, “The best day ever!”

Cedar Campus Library Update

Scholastic Book Fair

Students at Cedar Campus were very excited to attend the Scholastic Book Fair held in the library from Tuesday 16 - Friday 19 May. Great value, high interests book packs were a big hit with students who had an eye for a bargain. Colourful posters were also very popular with the entire stock selling out. In total, $2234 in sales were made which entitles the College to $720 in commission which has been taken as new books from the fair for the Cedar Campus library.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Held annually in May, National Simultaneous Storytime is an event held in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, and book shops across Australia and New Zealand. The book chose this year was The Speedy Sloth written by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Heath McKenzie. This book about Spike the sloth is an inspiring story that celebrates all winners - especially those that don’t come first.

Students in Foundation to Year 2 listened to the story being read then participated in literature-based activities. They were part of over two million young children in 59,000 locations to enjoy this inspiring story.

Read More in May Challenge

The Read More in May Challenge has now ended. Students have until the end of this week to submit their completed reading logs to be in for a chance to win one of eighteen book packs. That is one for each class. Winners will be announced in the next newsletter.

Year 7 and 8 - Brunswick Police Bullying Presentation

The Brunswick Police Station visited the Year 7&8s to teach them about the online bullying and cyber-safety. Students learnt about the online world and how people can share information in seconds. Also, they became aware that the distribution of inappropriate content is a criminal offensive. This can affect future employment, education, and travel. Students learnt ways to report offensive and harassment online and were able to recognise the importance of being respectful and making smart choices online.

Year 10 Fit For Life

Year 10 Fit For Life students have recently been critiquing and analysing societies ability to provide an equitable opportunity for all to get active. Students have had the opportunity to experience first-hand how transversely abled individuals still have the opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sports. Thanks to Basketball Victoria, Antonine students were able to experience firsthand the challenges of wheelchair basketball, and how these challenges can be overcome.

Throughout this Semester, our class was given the opportunity to build and program multiple robots, and research about them in the modern-day world. My friend, Antonio, and I built an elephant that can do normal tasks, such as moving forwards and backwards, and moving its head up and down, so that it wraps its trunk around an object. We’ve also programmed it to make elephant sounds, so that it would act just like a real elephant.
