Meerkat Performance Incursion

Wednesday, August 21, 2024

On Wednesday, 21 August the actors from Meerkat Productions performed two plays bringing to life books that were shortlisted for the book of the year awards.

Foundation to Year 4 viewed the adaptation of the picture book Timeless, written and illustrated by Kelly Canby. This beautifully colourful book is about a boy called Emit (whose parents turned back time to name him) who is surrounded by busyness. Dad is too busy to read stories, Mum is too busy to play games and Emit’s brother and sister are simply too busy doing nothing to do anything, at all. Emit tries everything he can think of to get more time, he tries to catch it, wait for it, but it’s not until Emit tries to buy some time that he learns the secret which is, if you want time, you have to make it. The actors were very impressed with the attentiveness of the students and their enthusiastic singing of the final song.

Year 5 & 6 students viewed the adaptation of Being Jimmy Baxter. This book, shortlisted in the Younger Readers category, was written by Fiona Lloyd. It is a gently funny yet powerful coming-of-age story about a boy who finds a way to survive despite overwhelming odds through his special bond with a loyal friend, a beautiful teacher, an old recluse, and the music of Elvis.
