On Wednesday 9 August, Nick Gadd and Phoebe Lindner, members of the Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) visited Antonine College to present to the Year 12 Legal Studies Class.

The purpose of the incursion was to learn first-hand the important role of the Victorian Law Reform Commission and its ability to influence law reform in Victoria. The role of the VLRC and a recent example of the VLRC recommending law reform is prescribed as Key Content knowledge in the Unit 4, Outcome 2 Legal Studies Study Design and the incursion proved to benefit our learning and understanding of the VLRC.

Nick and Phoebe presented and engaging workshop explaining the role of the VLRC in influencing a change in the law, with reference to two contemporary examples: Inclusive Juries: Access for People Who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind or Have Low Vision (2022) and Committal and pre-trial procedures in indictable criminal matters (2020).

The students had the opportunity to actively participate in the workshop by answering and asking questions. They gained a solid understanding of the role of the VLRC in law reform and a deeper appreciation of its ability to influence law reform in Victoria.

Our students impressed both Nick and Phoebe with their active participation and insightful questions and wonderings. Both Nick and Phoebe happily stayed back during break as some students remained to ask further questions. Both Nick and Phoebe commented on the high calibre of student responses and questions both during the workshop and at break.

Upon the conclusion of the presentation, Nick Gadd presented each student with a free Law Reform VLRC booklet which is a wonderful resource in our study of law reform in Victoria.

The Year 12 Legal Studies students are to be commended for their enthusiastic participation and respectful behaviour throughout the presentation.
