Wednesday, July 31, 2024

Students in Year 5 went on an excursion to the Mary Mackillop Heritage Centre where they learnt about Australia’s first Saint Mary Mackillop and who she was, explored her mission where she kept her faith in God and her vision for a more caring world, helping those who were poor and needy, especially children. Students enjoyed participating in activities that allowed them to connect with their faith, participated in prayer, reflection and explored ways in which they could follow her example of being kind, helpful and caring individuals. Students attended a mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral and were amazed by its beauty. Overall, the year 5 students had a great day.

Student reflection

After we worked so hard, all grade 5 students had the opportunity to have an excursion at the Mary MacKillop Heritage Center to comprehend the life of St. Mary MacKillop. When we arrived the area, we noticed a very beautiful large building in front of us. Everyone was welcomed in and each individual class was chosen to attend activities we were going to alternate on. Excitement was visible in everybody’s faces.

The classes participated in an activity where someone presents the timeline of Mary MacKillop to us. We also got to ask different questions and share thoughts about who we would always remember in our life. Another activity we had done was pulling random artefacts that we had to guess what they were related to. You could always ask for backup if you had to!

The last activity we had finished involved a museum where we got to observe and discuss about historical clothes and supplies. It was now time for a break to refill our empty stomachs and hang out with friends for a while. Moments later, we took a quick walk to the St. Patrick’s Cathedral to have moments with the Lord.

Finally, the travel got us very wet due to the rainy weather conditions, but it didn’t really affect us. In the cathedral, we had a very long mass to pray, reflect with the priest, and think about God. We then entered a garden which a statue of Mary MacKillop remained along with a staircase fountain. Overall, everyone who was in the excursion had a very fun time to have the opportunity to experience all the activities and events.
