Year 7 History Incursion
Tuesday, August 20, 2024
This term, our Year 7 students have been exploring the fascinating worlds of ancient Egypt and China in their Humanities classes. To deepen their understanding and bring history to life, we recently hosted an incursion led by History Up Close, a program designed to engage students with hands-on experiences and expert knowledge.
The incursion featured two exciting sessions. The first focused on the clothing and artefacts used by people in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Students had the opportunity to see and handle replicas of historical items, learning about their significance and how they were used in daily life. This interactive session allowed students to connect with the past in a tangible way, enriching their studies of ancient cultures.
The second workshop delved into the world of ancient warfare and gladiators. Students were captivated by the discussion on battle tactics, weaponry, and the lives of gladiators.
These workshops have sparked a greater interest in our students and have provided a dynamic complement to their classroom learning. We look forward to seeing how this experience will inspire their ongoing studies of ancient civilisations.
Student Highlights:
- I enjoyed the watching the gladiator fights.
- I really enjoyed when we got to learn about the armour used in wars and battles in ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and ancient Egypt.
- Dressing up and finding out more about how war life was back then.
- I loved the part where we got to dress up and wear armour.
- I loved dressing up as the ancient citizens/king/queens, and the gladiator session was amazing.
- The recent humanities incursion on ancient Egypt was both educational and engaging! We learned about the types of armour the Egyptians used, including leather and bronze, and how they wore simple tunics or kilts made from linen. There was so many props and armour that was used on people to demonstrate what happened and what they wore when the battles were on. What I really enjoyed most about the humanities incursion, was when we got to dress up and when we got to use a net, sword, helmet and a shield! I learnt so much from this humanities incursion and it was very fun.
