Years 3 and 5 Maths Extension: MAV Games Days

Friday, August 16, 2024

One of the great highlights of the year for students in our Maths Extension program is the opportunity to play and compete against other schools in the annual Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) Games Days. There are separate days for each of the year levels, and schools bring one or two teams of four students each to participate in a range of problem-solving and strategic games and challenges. Year 3 students went to Derrimut Primary School on Friday the 2nd of August to compete against 10 other schools in partner challenge games, team problem solving, the famous team relay (which involves actual sprinting as well as mathematics!).

One of our teams used their accurate estimation skills to correctly guess the number of jellybeans in a jar, winning themselves a sweet treat as well as having a lot of fun on the day. The following week on Friday the 9th of August, our Year 5 students travelled to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School to compete against 14 other schools, and while they didn’t win any jellybeans, they had a great time and kept stretching their mathematical skills. While sadly there isn’t a Year 4 Games Day this year, the Year 6 Maths Extension students are looking forward to participating in a MAV Games Day at the start of next term.
